We have really been inundated with work lately ..... we have been installing new cladding facias on behalf of Interserve @ Good Hope Hospital and cleaning cladding to IKEA Coventry which has the footprint of 10 football pitches and is 7 storeys high......we have the contract to clean the cladding twice yearly and have been doing so for the last 2 years.

We were approached from Interserve as one of their approved suppliers to replace cladding flashing as the existing installation was ingressing water, we were intructed to remove the existing flashing....fill the void to the recess with mastic and re-attatch new flashing with mastic strips and screw fixing .

We deployed our specialist Confined Space Team on behalf of Bham City Council to deliver concrete inspections to assess the integrety to one of many culverts that run under the proposed expansion of the  A453 just outside Nottingham.

The culvert is 92 metres in length and had multiple ventilation openings but for our purposes, only two entries / exits were an option..... so we decided to split each day into access / egress to half the culvert each day.

The task entailed provision of a defect survey, concrete inspection & break out, inspection on condition of re bar after break out.

All of our works were overseen by a  City & Guilds Level 4 Confined Space Supervisor
....overseeing works to  NC2 NC3 NC4 Medium to High Risk entrants

Confined Space Silo Cleaning & Inspection

We have completed today the annual clean and inspection to a number of silo's for a National Bakeries Company.

We deployed 3 of our specialist Confined Space / Rope Access team to carry out the works ... all works were overseen by our Confined Space Supervisor who is trained & certificated to City & Guilds Level 4.

Prior to works commencing a number of statutory obligations had to be fulfilled.

A SSOW Safe System of Work was put in place .... this included supplying the Client with  site specific Risk & Method Statements.

A PTW Permit to Work was completed by our Supervisor and the Client.

A LOTO Lock Out Tag Out system was put in place on all associated electrical / mechanical plant.

An initial atmospheric reading was taken using a 4 gas air monitor, this PEAK reading was logged on the PTW and the Gas Reading Log.

Once the above obligations were satisfied, our technicians proceeded to carry out the cleaning & inspections.

Cleaning consisted of removal of  build up of flour to walls and roof of silos..... the Inspections consisted of providing a written & photographic report on any signs of infestation, condition of explosion blast covers and filtration system.

Cleaning & Inspections to food storage silos must be carried out on an annual basis.




On completion of the works.... the PTW was signed off and the LOTO was restored.

We have  dedicated Supervisors trained and Certificated to City & Guilds Level 4  (972) Confined Space Supervisor

As Confined Space Supervisors we can sign off your SSOW or PTW or ......We can create site specific SSOW and PTW for you.

A SSOW MUST  contain  RAMS and a Rescue Plan.....a PTW may be added also

Our Confined Space Services are built around our extensive knowledge of cleaning, inspection and maintenance in sometimes, the most hostile of environments so we really know what we are talking about .

All projects undertaken are subject to a detailed site survey, where site specific risk assessments and method statements are supplied as part of the SSOW...... Safe System of Work.
We also provide PTW

Only when all measures required on the PTW are complete, will our technicians enter a confined space to carry out the task.

Once the task has been completed, the PTW documentation will be signed off as:
  • close out the entry.

We were called by Birmingham City Council to see if we could help Wolverhampton Council on an emergency inspection job .........

The site - Wolverhampton Civic Hall

The problem - Spalling concrete

An initial site visit was made on tuesday to determine work involved and access to the work area.

Client agreed our RAMS and we have attended site on Thursday to carry out inspection and removal of loose substrate, primarily to the front elevation directly above the main entrance....major events are programmed in for Friday and Saturday....

Our inspection findings consisted of major concrete spalling where re-bar was present and had corroded ..... this could suggest the presence of flourides, chlorides or high alumina cement.... the concrete samples have been sent off to the lab for testing.

Works to the rest of the building are ongoing.

Explosive Confined Space Cleaning, Maintenance and Inspection Services

 
Under what conditions can an explosion occur?

There is a risk of explosion when several elements are present:

           An oxidant: Oxygen over 23% in the air, for example......  

A fuel: Gas or vapors: hydrocarbons, solvents, varnishes, gas, alcohol, chemical products, agents for manufacture of plastics, powders and dust: magnesium, flour, aluminum, sulfur, cellulose, cereals, carbon, wood, milk, resins, sugars, starch, polystyrenes, fertilizer, etc...... a hot spot or a source of combustion

For example, when filling a grain silo, the concentration of dust is very high. The environment then is dangerous: a rise in temperature, or even a spark, can trigger an explosion.

If a risk of explosion is identified in an environment (gas or dust), a safety requirement is imposed for the use of equipment that is specifically designed to function without becoming a potential source of combustion. ATEX equipment offers different types of protection designed to diminish the risk of explosion.

What is the ATEX?




The ATEX regulation is a European directive which requires all heads of organizations to fully understand the risks related to certain explosive environments. To do this, an evaluation of the risk of explosion in a company is required in order to identify any locations where explosive environments could form, and then to put in place the means to avoid explosion.


How do you choose equipment that is adapted for an environment at risk of explosion?


ATEX environments are subdivided into three zones:

  • zones 0, 1 or 2 for gases
  • zones 20, 21 or 22 for dust  

Our equipment is rated to Ex ATEX zones 0, 1 & 2 and all IP zones 20, 21 and 22.
